Bruno Gatinet talks with Geert Vons, General Director of Sea Shepherd NL
Bruno Gatinet, European Correspondent for Chicago3Media, talks with Geert Vons, General Director of Sea Shepherd Netherlands, about the latest addition to the fleet named the Ocean Warrior.
The Ocean Warrior proudly flies the Dutch flag because Amsterdam is more than just a port of registry. It’s also the headquarters for Sea Shepherd Global and its national chapter Sea Shepherd Netherlands, as well as the Dutch Postcode Lottery, whose Dreamfund Award paid for the construction of the Ocean Warrior by Dutch shipbuilder Damen. Amsterdam is the only scheduled stop for the maiden voyage, the ship will not be visiting any other ports before its arrival at the Southern Ocean campaign operations base in Perth, Australia.
Sea Shepherd Global’s Mission to Protect Whales in the Southern Ocean
Japanese whalers are still hunting whales in the Antarctic despite having their “scientific research” exception rejected by the International Court of Justice in 2014. The international community has failed to enforce the ICJ’s rulings in the Southern Ocean, so it’s once again up to Sea Shepherd to take action. A legal injunction now prevents Captain Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd USA from leading whale defense campaigns against the Japanese, but Sea Shepherd Global and its worldwide chapters are continuing the fight.
How the Ocean Warrior is Different
Thanks to the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s Dreamfunds Award, Sea Shepherd Global has been able to purchase its first custom-built Antarctic patrol vessel, the Ocean Warrior. Designed to operate in extreme weather conditions, this state-of-the-art ship is capable of achieving speeds that far exceed any of the vessels in the current fleet Sea Shepherd fleet (25+ knots). This new ship is also equipped with a hybrid propulsion system, providing an extended range and drastic reduction of fuel consumption, both lowering fuel costs as well as limiting CO² emissions. The Ocean Warrior has both the speed and the stamina to keep up with -- and even outrun -- the fastest Japanese whaling ships.
