In an upscale Mexican watering hole this past Thursday, something radical was happening. Members and advocates of Emily’s List, a million-strong online and offline community that works to elect more women to public office, gathered for the evening at Moe’s Cantina to eat mango salsa and “meet and greet” each other. The get-together coincidentally wound up taking place in the midst of a contentious Congressional debate about birth control, which Emily’s List President Stephanie Schriock says would not even be happening if there were more women in Congress. (Currently, only 17% of the decision-making body is female.)

You have to be mentally prepared to see a show like South Pacific. One of Rogers and Hammerstein’s most famous musicals, the show is based on James A. Michener’s 1947 “Tales of the South Pacific” and it smacks of that era’s racial and social tensions. But however antiquated the musical may seem, it’s hard to ignore some parallels between its narrative and our own story today.

Luna Negra Dance Theater continues its season this spring with a World Premiere by Artistic Director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano titled CARMEN.maquia, a Picasso-inspired, contemporary take on the famous, fiery and flirtatious Spanish gypsy, Carmen. This work marks Luna Negra’s first-ever full evening-length production and is a creative collaboration between three prize-winning artists: choreographer Sansano, Spanish fashion designer David Delfin and set designer Luis Crespo. Luna Negra presents CARMEN.maquia in one performance only at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph Drive, Saturday, March 24 at 8 pm.

City Winery Chicago, a fully operational winery, restaurant with outdoor patio, concert hall, and private event space set to open in the heart of Chicago’s West Loop this summer, has named veteran Chicago talent buyer Colleen Miller as Program Director. In coordination with City Winery in New York, Miller will oversee all of the music and arts programming at the Chicago venue.

Stephens today announced that the Village of Rosemont will host a job fair Feb. 19–21 for Chicago-area residents seeking positions at venues opening this spring in The Park at Rosemont. Approximately 250 full-time and part-time employees are needed to staff Adobe Gila's Margarita Fajita Cantina, Five Roses Pub, Kings Lanes & Lounge and Zanies Comedy Night Club. The job fair will be presented at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road, First Floor Ballroom. Hours are as follows: Sunday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; Monday, Feb. 20, 12–8 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2–10 p.m.
